Born in 80s Detroit, Luke Hess grew up around the Motor City’s mythical warehouse parties, about as good a DJ origin story as you could hope for. His decade-spanning career has seen his purist production work find its voice on labels like Omar S’s FXHE and Carl Craig’s Planet E, and more recently a home on his self-run DeepLabs imprint, a channel for hope in a world that has it in short supply. His sets too are a demonstration of his tight mixing and faculty for layering rhythm, long-format stints that have graced the booth at clubs like Fabric (London), Unit (Tokyo), Bassment (Hong Kong) and Berghain. His continuing work as music producer and firebrand selector is focused on further sonic exploration, groove-centered and soulful techno true to his midwestern roots. Here for Bassiani Podcast 326, Hess shows his knack for beats once more: syncopated synths and driving basslines with his fingerprints all over them, a sharp selection of minimal rhythms flavoured by his many years in the field. Clocking in at an hour and a half, this latest installment is a testament to Hess’ keen instincts and skill on the decks, a deep exploration of techno in its more spiritual manifestations, boundary-pushing, mind-altering and body-moving percussions from a seasoned talent.
