Richard just got his driver’s license, and his new freedom comes in the form of a 2009 black Honda CR-V. He’s already learning one of the other rites of passage that comes with having your own car: sanding down a scrape, priming it and painting it himself. That became the idea for this folk song about the freedom of being able to get in the car and go. Richard can drive himself to work, drive to volunteer, head out with his friends, and begin making his own choices about where the road takes him. I recorded this with guitar, mandolin and fiddle, celebrating that wonderful moment when a set of car keys suddenly makes your world a whole lot bigger.
