This one is straight for the dancers. Built on a pitched soul hook, rolling 4/4 drums and a bassline with plenty of grin in it, Jimi Needles’ ‘I Choose You’ taps into that disco house sweet spot without getting stuck in nostalgia. There’s a clear nod to the filtered French house heat of the late ’90s, but the drums hit firmly in the now. Jimi’s never been one to sit neatly in a lane. His roots run through hip hop, soul, funk and disco, with turntablism, breaks and bass music all thrown into the mixer. A proper cut-and-paste party rocker, he’s built his name through genre-fluid mixtapes, festival sets, bootlegs and releases on Thick Boy Records, Swing & Bass and Bomb Strikes. ‘I Choose You’ feels like the next logical step. Funky, direct and made for movement, it’s the sort of record that works just as well at a sun-baked festival as it does in a sweaty basement when the lights start doing their thing.
