“Islands” has a laid back acoustic, almost reggae feel that touches on the strange contradiction of being human: we’re all living our own separate lives, carrying our own questions, dreams, fears and histories—but we’re all drifting through the same water. Every man is an island, but every island has a shore. And maybe the shore is where we meet—where we let somebody in, where we find something bigger than ourselves, or where we finally decide what is worth fighting for. There’s a little bit of procrastination and self-doubt in this one, too. We tell ourselves that someday we’re going to become the person we always imagined we’d be. Someday we’ll prove ourselves. Someday we’ll have the answers. Maybe we’ll even start tomorrow morning. But life is already happening.
