Following their marriage, Conroy and his wife journey northward through the Americas, visiting Rio de Janeiro, the Caribbean, and the rugged coasts of Nova Scotia, where their first child is born. What begins as a joyful family voyage soon becomes a test of endurance, faith, and survival. The movement opens with warm themes of family, new life, and hope before gradually darkening as the young family prepares for the perilous crossing of the North Atlantic. Fleeting moments of calm give way to uncertainty as they pause briefly in the stark isolation of Greenland. The landscape is beautiful, yet unforgiving, and the vast ocean beyond offers no guarantees. Without warning, a violent storm erupts. The orchestra unleashes towering waves, howling winds, and relentless seas as Conroy struggles against forces far greater than himself. Brass, percussion, and strings portray the fury of nature while recurring family themes remind listeners what is at stake. Lashed to the wheel and determined to protect those he loves, Conroy endures the greatest challenge of his life. When the storm finally breaks, the music turns inward. Exhausted and nearly defeated, Conroy collapses as his wife quietly takes the helm. Themes of courage and devotion transform into themes of partnership and shared strength. Together they guide their family toward home. The movement concludes with a radiant sunrise over Ireland. Family themes, maritime motifs, and melodies from earlier chapters unite as husband, wife, and child finally glimpse the shores they feared they might never see again.
