Hardcore Soul - A Mix By Om Unit This mix attempts to trace a lineage in British music that is rarely discussed, highlighting the link between what became known as 'UK Street Soul' and the early Hardcore movement. Hardcore is typically defined by its trademark off-kilter synth stabs, euphoric pianos and clashing breakbeat mayhem, and is seldom described as 'soulful' by any means. There is, in my mind at least, a thin vein in the history of this movement that remains perhaps under-represented in the conversation. What we can hear across this lineage — from street soul to hardcore — are the same instruments, breakbeats, vocal stylings and, most importantly, culture: incubating that combination of elements to form something fresh, and uniquely Black and British at its heart. This mix is the culmination of a couple of years of research and digging into various corners of music history, and attempts to build a narrative that celebrates the more soulful roots of the rave scene; a movement that changed the world — and perhaps surfaces some lesser-known but oh-so-familiar sonics that echo back through time.
