Lyra's Lullaby

About this track
I’m over the moon to present this collaboration with my sister Roxanna Panufnik featuring the amazing trombone virtuoso Peter Moore. Rox, you may know, is a renowned classical composer, as was our dad, Sir Andrzej Panufnik, so as you can imagine we grew up very much surrounded by music. Yet despite the incredible concerts, rehearsals and visits to the house from true maestros, it certainly wasn’t always classical. Rox and I would watch Top of the Pops religiously as kids, buy singles, our common love included Human League, Bowie, Depeche Mode, Visage, Landscape… but at some point Rox, whilst learning harp and flute among other things, pursued her love for classical, while I went to the dark side getting further deep into electronica and drumming. But I have always felt that we retain a common thread, maybe linked through our dad’s unique percussive and harmonic music which obviously resonates so much with us respectively (we even hear it in each other’s work!). We have long wanted to collaborate, we very nearly did on something epic a few years ago which involved Malcolm McLaren and Damien Hirst, occasionally I have provided a groove for a couple of pieces of Rox’s, but this is the first time we have properly worked together, and it was huge fun. Rox had scored the most part, an arrangement using beautiful traditional Croatian lullaby “Ljuljaj mi, Sine” as a starting point, for glockenspiel and piano with a haunting melody for trombone. She then brought it to my studio where I instrumentalised the other parts with different sounds and effects, and then the incredible and illustrious Peter came in to record the trombone (a tight squeeze in my little broom cupboard studio!). I then continued to further create the soundscapes and synth arrangements - and dub it up a bit! It was further mastered to Dolby Atmos, creating a 360degree sound space, which was also fun, you can get that on Apple Music. I think it’s a perfect blend of our two styles, and I also hear dad in it too somehow. But I also hear a bit of David Lynch as you carefully tread your way through the dark forrest!
