Unfortunately, this is what I've learned Not to laugh, even when the moment's earned. One loud joke, one crack in the wall I bit down on my own hand and let myself fall. I understood that goodness makes no sound, That conscience in this story is never found. A bun holds more virtue than charity's face Tell the starving man: the market's a disgrace. I learned that sin can settle in a day, That even the most spiritual can decay. I learned to drag the rising ones back down They'll get full of themselves; let them drown. I was a river - I became a dam. I was the day - now look at what I am. I was good - then rejected- lost the light. I was the day - and then I became the night.. I learned to keep my distance, build my wall, To gather ammunition through it all. I listened to their heartaches, every wound Then used those same wounds when the war was tuned. Inside a city drowning, dark and wild, On hidden roads where vipers coil inside I stand at the crossroads, torn apart: Do I keep shrinking, or do I lose my heart? Do I let them walk straight over me, take each blow? Or become the man who lets his conscience go Who made his peace with all that lies below, And called the death of mankind: a show? Generation to generation, blood to blood, We pull each other under like a flood. We strike like dominoes, you into me Me into them, into infinity. Don't call it a reaction, don't open that door.
