Two years since the release of his highly acclaimed debut album Dawn Is A Melody, one of Naarm / Melbourne’s finest Finn Rees announces a brand-new EP Feel The Sun. It’s a vibrant, groove-driven celebration of jazz across three dynamic tracks, topped off with a Close Counters dancefloor remix. The title track from the EP unfolds as a 9-minute jazz dance odyssey, bursting with energy it’s doused in soul-nourishing strings and radiant horns destined to warm hearts and heads the world over. One of the cream of the crop coming out Naarm / Melbourne much-championed music scene, Finn has cemented his position as a globally celebrated jazz musician, composer, producer and keyboardist. His masterfully expressive keys playing and genre-blending approach, have seen him tour far and wide both under his solo project and as one half of dance-focussed duo Close Counters. You’ll also find him as a keys player for many of his contemporaries both in the recording studio and on stage. Following the release of his collaborative two-tracker with SHOLTO last year, Finn returns to Mr Bongo with this captivating new solo EP. The EP’s title track ‘Feel The Sun’ is a constantly evolving voyage. Elements and instruments flow in and out as the track builds and breaks like the rays of the sun. Anchored by the drums of Lucky Pereira, percussion from Javier Fredes and Yunior Terry’s upright bass, the song grows from morning light to midday heat. Finn’s natural touch on the grand piano and Rhodes marries the lush array of punchy horns, flutes and lush strings. The driving rhythm section creates a powerful bed for the cosmic layers of synths and ensemble arrangements to glide on top. One of those euphoric jazz dance pieces that will leave you feeling lighter, warmer and nourished down to your very core. As Finn mentions, “I’ve always wanted to create a tune that brings orchestrated elements and lush horns onto the dancefloor. A track that takes you on a real journey throughout, almost like Harry Thumann or David Matthews Big Band. I originally wrote this piece for one of my other projects Close Counters, then decided it fit better with my jazz ensemble. The feeling behind ‘Feel The Sun’ is about nourishing the good moments while you can. I wrote it after the most of the world was able to move freely again in 2022, but noticing that things can change so quickly. ‘Feel the sun as it comes around, for it cannot stay too long’”.
