Before We Ever Met is the most personal song I’ve ever written. Approximately fourteen hours after my grandson, Theodore, entered the world, I sat down in Pennsylvania and wrote this letter while he slept nearly 2,500 miles away in Washington State. At that moment, we hadn’t shared a single memory. I didn’t know when I’d get to hold him, hear him laugh, or watch him grow. Life had already placed mountains, miles, and uncertainty between us. I was working to build a small business from the ground up, chasing a future that wasn’t there yet, hoping that one day the distance wouldn’t matter so much. But one thing was already certain. He was loved. This song isn’t about trucking, business, or the miles behind me. It’s about the miles between two people who hadn’t met yet—and the hope that one day those miles would become memories. Whether Theodore hears this next year or twenty years from now, these words will still mean exactly what they meant on the day they were written: Before we ever met… You were already loved.
