About this track

Gavilán is a song born from watching red-tailed hawks circle the meadow behind our home in the Catskill Mountains. These birds are emissaries of change, their slow, ancient rhythms above the treeline feel like something far older than us. The track is a homage to them, and to the idea that some patterns are eternal. At the heart of the song is the gaita, a traditional Colombian wind instrument with roots stretching back centuries to indigenous communities along the northern coast, the Kogui and Arhuacos, who crafted the flutes from cactus stems and beeswax, and used them to imitate the sounds of nature, including the flight of birds. This track weaves West African ngoni, Zimbabwean mbira, and subtle Jamaican dub influences, forming a sound that moves the way hawks do, unhurried, purposeful, tracing the same sky from many different directions. Liz’s vocals are an invitation - a call to welcome the hawks and the blessings they carry.Read less
