Not the Default is a sound journey about reclaiming identity beyond the roles, expectations, and survival patterns that were assigned without consent. Emerging from the emotional landscape of Crown of Permission, this piece honors the moment a person realizes they were never meant to live as someone else’s acceptable version of themselves. The track moves through tension, exhaustion, resistance, and quiet self-recognition. Atmospheric layers and spacious tones create an environment where the listener is not pushed toward healing or resolution, but instead invited to exist without explanation. Not the Default holds space for the truth that constantly adapting for safety can slowly erase the self — and that choosing authenticity may feel unfamiliar, vulnerable, and necessary all at once. Created by Sound Alchemist Julie Jewels Smoot, this work continues her trauma-informed approach to sound through non-directive listening, emotional honesty, and nervous system awareness.
