THE STORY: The year is 1860. A boy raised in a shack is beaten by his father and told that his skin makes him a king, despite having no shoes on his feet. He meets a boy from the nearby plantation by the creek. They bond over fishing and skipping stones, oblivious to the laws of the land. When the town mob finds out and comes for the friend, the white boy steals his father’s horse and gun, not to join the mob, but to hold them off while his friend escapes North. He realizes that hate is a language he refuses to speak.
