I composed and produced the original soundtrack, basing all the work on the search for sounds capable of representing and evoking the deep memories of the protagonist’s early years in Cambodia, and connecting that world with the Western one into which he was projected after being adopted by the same director at the age of four. The soundtrack moves between thematic lines linked to the emotional realities of the characters and indeterminate sounds, with detailed spatial design created through the Dolby Surround 5.1 system. This piece, combining symphonic orchestra and Cambodian ethnic instruments, represents a sonic synthesis of the entire soundtrack. It was conceived and mixed in Dolby Surround 5.1, where the Western orchestral sounds are positioned in the front and the Southeast Asian instruments behind, creating an immersive spatial dialogue between the two musical worlds. My compositional poetics clearly emerge in the relationship between music and image, where sounds become part of the visual movement itself, treated as “images within the scene.” The most intense moments are interpreted by the beautiful voice of Lavinia Mancusi. The film received numerous awards, including the Special Mention at the 34th African, Asian and Latin American Film Festival, the Signum Audience Award at the 18th Salina DocFest, three recognitions at the Cambodia Town Film Festival (USA), the official selection by the University of Auckland (CINEDANTE), and the Audience Award at the Rome International Documentary Festival – RIDF. It also achieved great public success (sold out at Cinema Farnese, Rome), attended by the director and several renowned figures, including Maestro Marco Bellocchio. Questo brano è tratto dalla colonna sonora del film “VAKHIM” di Francesca Pirani, proiettato il 6 settembre 2024 alle Notti Veneziane – Giornate degli Autori (81ª Mostra del Cinema di Venezia). Ho composto e prodotto la colonna sonora originale basandomi sulla ricerca di sonorità che potessero rappresentare ed evocare le memorie profonde dei primi anni di vita del protagonista, vissuti in Cambogia, mettendo in relazione quel mondo con quello occidentale nel quale è stato proiettato dopo l’adozione, avvenuta a quattro anni da parte della stessa regista. La scrittura musicale si muove tra linee tematiche legate alle realtà emotive dei personaggi e suoni indeterminati, con un accurato lavoro spaziale realizzato in Dolby Surround 5.1. Questo brano, con orchestra sinfonica e strumenti etnici cambogiani, rappresenta una sintesi sonora dell’intera colonna sonora: gli strumenti occidentali sono disposti in primo piano e quelli del Sud-Est Asiatico sullo sfondo, creando un dialogo immersivo tra i due mondi musicali. Nel rapporto musica-immagine emerge la mia poetica compositiva, dove i suoni diventano parte integrante del movimento scenico, trattati anch’essi come immagini nella scena. I momenti più intensi sono interpretati dalla splendida voce di Lavinia Mancusi. Il film ha ricevuto la Menzione Speciale al 34° Festival Cinema Africano, d’Asia e America Latina, il Premio Signum del Pubblico al Salina DocFest, tre riconoscimenti al Cambodia Town Film Festival (USA), la selezione ufficiale alla University of Auckland (CINEDANTE) e il Premio del Pubblico al Rome International Documentary Festival – RIDF. Grande successo di pubblico (sold out al Cinema Farnese di Roma), alla presenza della regista e di importanti esponenti del cinema, tra cui il Maestro Marco Bellocchio.
