L'etourdissement

About this track
I wrote this song six years ago while reading Joël Egloff’s brilliant novel L'étourdissement (The Dizziness) for the first time. The book follows a man living in a bleak industrial environment that is always covered in fog, where physical dizziness becomes metaphor for his mental and existential disorientation. From the book: Morning doesn't look like the idea one has of morning. If you're not used to it, you don't even notice it. The difference from night is subtle; you have to know how to look. It's just one shade lighter. Even the old roosters can't tell the difference anymore. Some days, the streetlights don't switch off. The sun has risen, though—of course it has; it's there, somewhere above the horizon, behind the mists, the smoke, the heavy clouds, and the dust suspended in the air. One must imagine bad weather during a polar night. That is what our beautiful days look like.
