Hitchin' the Leatherwood Express to School
About this track
Hello everyone, I'd like to share another anecdote from my childhood in the Ohio hill country. These were indeed fascinating times when children were encouraged to be inquisitive and inventive. We three young boys persuaded Uncle Frank to allow us to ride to school on the B&O steam locomotive, which transported livestock and industrial goods from Cincinnati to Baltimore. As the chief engineer, Uncle Frank passed through our Leatherwood Valley three days a week. We had the privilege of riding his train during its final days, as the B&O sold the line to C&O in the early '60s. The sleek black steel was eventually replaced by diesel engines for a few years, until C&O ceased operations on the line. The nostalgic sound of the train whistles as they entered the Leatherwood Valley remains a cherished memory of our past.
