A song dedicated to the self determined people of Ireland who bravely sailed on the Dunbrody ship to America in search of a new life, far away from famine and persecution. Lyrics We sailed from the Quay, and I heard an old man say ‘goodbye New Ross’ And I looked back at the town that I lost, and saw her fading away They took me below, for time on the deck was for cooking a stove The weak and the weary, the brave and the bold, set sail for the Promised Land And a young man read a letter from a cousin in America, who was waiting there with a job for him, and he said there is plenty of work for young Irishmen, with the will, to abstain and use all their skills Dunbrody your bough points West, but Caoimhe stills beats in my chest Dunbrody your voyage we make, it’s a risk we are willing to take They battened down the hatch, and I felt a fever taking over my head And as weak as a kitten I pray to be dead, while a storm is raging in me And I open the door and I crawl the wet decks to the edge of this world And gather up the strength, to throw myself over, but Captain Williams, rescued me Dunbrody your bough points West, but Caoimhe stills beats in my chest Dunbrody your voyage we make, It’s a risk we are willing to take They tie down my feet, and slip me some whiskey to help me to sleep And I dream of a girl and a bottle of stout, by a warm fire that never goes out For your love is all I have, and nothing feels quite like your warming embrace It soothes my head and unfurls my brow, and I want for nothing but you.
