First Step

Creative inspiration comes and goes. There is a time to rest, and a time to be active. Each Summer is usually a musically fallow period for me. Kids are home from school. The garden is calling. Routines are off and the air conditioner is too loud. On August 1, 2024 of last year I wrote the beginning of this piece. I thought it was incomplete. But returning to it a year later, I realized it was basically done, it needed just a bit of color in the second half. There always comes a time in the writing process where I need to commit a piece to a form. It’s a weird feeling. That if I don’t record a piece, it feels incomplete. I don’t know how some people do it: writing entire compositions, committing them to paper before they are recorded. Because there are always spontaneous, unplanned moments in recording, that end up fitting perfectly in the final version of the piece. It’s like I have to leave open the possibility of something interesting happening in the recording process. I’ve named this piece “First Step”, because in the creative process, there is always a first step that needs to be taken. And that first step is always the hardest. This is my first step toward whatever is ahead.
